A member of the public has alerted the Council that they have spotted a large amount of Lions Mane jellyfish on Donabate Beach. The pictures below were taken by them on Sunday 05/09/2021. These jellyfish may also be spotted at our other beaches.
Please be advised that following a return to excellent water quality the Advisory notice at Malahide Beach and the Prohibition notice at Claremont Beach have been lifted.
Bathing Water quality results for monitoring samples taken on Monday 6th September, 2021. The results met the standard for “excellent” for all identified bathing waters. The non-identified bathing water at Malahide Beach (constant red flag) met with “excellent” status also.

This is a temporary public health notice advising the public of the potential risk of illness due to the ‘Poor’ classification -it is not a ban on swimming or a closure of the beach.
Fingal County Council will work with various agencies to improve the water quality at the two beaches in the county which saw their classification drop in the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual Bathing Water Classifications for the 2021 Season.
This is brown foam which is seen on our beaches from time to time. It is called surf foam or surf scum. It can be easily mistaken for pollution, but it isn’t. It is a collection of millions of microscopic algae (bloom) and is a natural phenomenon. They need sunlight to grow and attach to the bubbles in the surf causing foaming.
